Where experience and coursework may not count, an additional requirement of about 3,200 to 4,000 supervised (and verified) hours of clinical professional experience must be met. Renewal of LCSW requires a certain number of hours of continuing education.
Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) – requires a master’s or doctorate in social work from a CSWE-accredited program or college. As with the LCSW, this license also requires the verification of (typically) up to 4,000 hours of clinical professional experience, including diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, over a minimum of two years and no more than six years of professional employment. A certain number of hours of continuing education may be required each time the license comes up for renewal. Because a LISW license is not recognized across the country, students are advised to check with their State for its equivalent.
