Degree Types for Masters
in Biology Programs

There are two options for masters programs for biology majors – the Master of Arts (MA) and the Master of Science (MS) degree program. So, what is MA online, and what is MS online? Although educational institutions and the industry equally weigh both, each type of degree serves a different learning objective.

Master of Arts in Biology

A Master of Arts in Biology or MA Biology online degree is a better option for students who want to obtain a degree that will prepare them for advanced studies. An MA in Biology allows students to focus on their expertise in one or more subjects, such as biochemistry or cell biology, and gain exposure to a broad multi-disciplinary understanding of life science along with arts and humanities.

How long does it take to complete Online
Masters in Biology Programs

Typically, the online master’s in biology is a two-year degree program designed to prepare students for careers in biological sciences and professional programs, including medical school. Between 35 to 50 credits are usually required by students, who may opt for synchronous or asynchronous classes and thesis or non-thesis programs, which influence the program’s duration. The online master’s in biology can also be pursued as a part-time program. However, part-timers would require between 3 and 5 years to earn their degrees, depending on their course load.

Some universities offer three tracks that lead to the master’s degree in biology: a coursework track, a scholarly paper track, and a research thesis track. The coursework track can be completed in one year, and the scholarly paper track can be completed in 18 months. The research thesis track may usually require two years to complete.

Accelerated Online Masters
in Biology Programs

Accelerated courses are available in some schools, allowing students to graduate in less time. Lower graduation times can be achieved by opting for accelerated programs or credit transfers. Most masters programs take two years to complete, but some universities offer accelerated programs that help the applicant complete the program before the typical schedule. In almost all instances, students can combine a bachelor’s program with a master’s and complete both in 5 years instead of the usual 6 years. The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and Drexel University College of Arts and Science are excellent examples of accelerated programs combining a BS in Biology with an MS in Biology.

Some colleges even offer one year masters programs in biology, such as the Tulane University School of Science & Engineering, which has a 1 year biology master’s programs in Cell & Molecular Biology.

Accreditations for Online Masters
in Biology Programs

Accreditation is a term that includes both initial and ongoing accreditation of schools, higher education institutions, or programs aimed at meeting the quality requirements of nationally recognized and accredited accreditation bodies. Accreditation associations monitor the academic and administrative quality of schools, educational institutions, and programs. Pursuing accredited biology master’s degree programs is a good boost for one’s career as employers almost always hire people who have graduated from accredited universities. The Guide to College Accreditation has more information on accreditation.

The most common accrediting agencies in the United States are six, recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). They are:

  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)

Some schools offer biology degree programs that are programmatically accredited. Organizations such as the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) typically provide biology degree accreditation specific to a field of biology and at the program level. The ASBMB may accredit an MS or MA degree program in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a closely related field as meeting high standards.

How to Pay for Online Masters
in Biology Programs?

Although online programs are less expensive, with the added benefit of not having to pay for accommodation, transportation, or meals, they usually have tuition fees on par with traditional programs and keep increasing year by year. Some students may find these tuition costs hard to bear on their own. Fortunately, students can access a variety of financial aid programs that may significantly lower overall costs and ease their burden. Examples include:

For most students, a scholarship is a popular source of funding. Students excelling in academics, athletics, arts, or any other endeavor are eligible for scholarships provided by individuals, groups, non-profit organizations, for-profit companies, and religious and educational institutions.

Grants are need-based and are given to students who come from a poor background on a case-by-case basis. They can be used to pay for a range of education-related costs, including tuition, fees, board, and books and supplies. Grants, like scholarships, are monetary awards that do not have to be paid back.

Graduate Assistantships

Students can avail of graduate assistantships by taking up a part-time teaching or research job at the same institution where they are studying. For assisting professors with their teaching and/or research, graduate assistants receive a fee waiver or a monthly stipend.

Student Loans

Student loans are sums of money often borrowed from a bank, financial institution, or the federal government. These loans attract interest, which must be paid back along with the principal amount in equated monthly installments. Read about Donors for Student Loans and Grants for Student Loans to understand how one can apply for loan forgiveness to avoid repaying student loans.

Students can apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA to check if they are eligible for federal financial aid for grad school.

Find out everything you need to know about what financial aid is and how to pay for college to better understand and navigate college funding.
