Marketing helps to identify and distribute products or services to customers in exchange for currency. A Master’s in Marketing Online teaches marketing skills and how to leverage them.

The term “marketing” describes the full range of activities involved in earning revenue or recognition through promotion, publicity, and advertising. Marketing can involve a lot of creativity because there are no set rules for developing products that meet market expectations. However, several fundamental principles are involved in successful marketing, including targeting, positioning, and differentiation. A master’s in marketing online program is a graduate degree for students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree and want to get their master’s. Individuals in this program amass additional knowledge and acquire advanced skills in the field of marketing through courses that include Promotion Strategy, Data-Driven Marketing, and Social Media Analytics. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that marketing managers earn an annual median wage of $156,580 [1].

What is a Master’s in Digital Marketing?

The process of advertising products or services online via email, social media, websites, apps, search engine optimization (SEO), and other means is known as digital marketing. Digital marketers are responsible for and oversee the implementation of online marketing campaigns across all digital platforms and often work in a company’s marketing department or dedicated digital marketing companies. A digital marketer’s job includes contacting and interacting with clients via the Internet and other technologies. For their company/clients, digital marketing specialists often produce and distribute social media ads, email campaigns, or websites.

A Master’s in digital marketing online teaches students about the complicated topic of search engine optimization (SEO) and how to increase the volume and quality of customer traffic to a website. Those with an MS digital marketing online program study the most effective strategies for positioning a product or service for success and growth, along with how to evaluate which marketing channels are appropriate for their company’s brands, goods, and services.

MS in Marketing vs MBA in Marketing

The Master of Science in Marketing (MS in Marketing) and the Master of Business Administration in Marketing specialization (MBA Marketing) both have the potential to help students achieve their professional goals. The two degrees differ in some ways and cater to their varying needs.

Master of Science (MS Marketing)
An online Master’s in Marketing degree focuses on refining an individual’s marketing skills through concentrated courses and electives. Students of this program obtain a thorough understanding of innovative marketing tactics and management systems, allowing them to personalize their degree even further through specializations in marketing.

Master of Business Administration (MBA Marketing Specialization)
The online MBA with a Marketing specialization focuses on creating a standard business foundation for students who are not looking for an exclusive degree in marketing. The MBA program gives them an exhaustive understanding of management and administration, focusing on advancing their management careers. Opting for a marketing concentration couples this business knowledge with crucial marketing-related study.

Full-Time and Part-Time Marketing Master’s Programs

It generally takes about two years or 30 to 36 credits to complete the Master’s in marketing syllabus. Full-time students can finish their marketing Master’s in about 18 months, while those opting for self-paced or part-time study may require over 36 months to complete their studies. Candidates should note that the coursework load, chosen specialization, capstone project, internship, and mode of delivery (online, offline, or hybrid) will influence the time to graduate from a master’s in marketing degree program.

Accelerated Online Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing

In essence, accelerated master’s degrees are programs designed to allow students pursuing a bachelor’s degree to receive their master’s degree faster. Accelerated master’s degrees typically require them to complete a bachelor’s degree, followed by a shorter period (typically one year instead of the standard two) in which they complete the requirements for a master’s degree. However, universities increasingly offer the option to accelerate or fast-track a master’s program by transferring credits, additional coursework loads, specializations, program flexibility, etc.

While most online master’s in marketing will require about two years to complete, accelerated or fast-track programs can be finished in as few as 12 to 15 months. It is worth noting that these fast-packed programs are not ideal for working candidates or those with responsibilities outside of their education, as they tend to be rigorous and require summer-time study, too. Here are a few examples of accelerated online master’s in marketing degree programs:

Admission Requirements for Master’s in Marketing Online Programs

Applicants getting a Master’s degree in marketing need a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, preferably in marketing or a marketing-related field, and may require related work experiences. Although uncommon, depending on the incoming student’s educational background and the specialization they are opting for, they may also need to take prerequisite courses before beginning the master’s program. Each program and college may have different admission requirements. However, here is a list of general requirements by most accredited colleges:

  • Application for Admission
  • Application Fee
  • Official Academic Transcripts
  • An Undergraduate Degree in Marketing or Marketing-related Discipline
  • Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Scores
  • Personal Statement or Statement of Purpose
  • At least 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • Graduate Resume

Note: Students are advised to check with the admissions office of their chosen college for exact and specific admission requirements, as they vary by college and program.

Online Master’s in Marketing no GRE/GMAT Programs

Some colleges do not require students to take or submit scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) when applying for a marketing master’s degree online. However, applicants should consider whether taking one of these exams and submitting test scores will improve their chances of being accepted into the program. Test results are disregarded in several cases where they usually are necessary, provided the applicant has at least 3 to 5 years of professional experience, another master’s degree, or a good Grade Point Average (GPA).

Here are a few examples of online Master’s in marketing no GRE and online Master’s in marketing no GMAT:

How to Ensure a Master’s in Online Marketing Degree is Accredited

Accreditation is a procedure by which an outside authority certifies that a school or degree program meets preset quality and rigor standards. Accreditation is possible for online, hybrid, and on-campus degree programs. While accreditation is optional, it provides numerous advantages because it validates a program to employers and other colleges and institutions. Accreditation also ensures that students can easily and readily transfer credits from one recognized institution to another and be eligible to receive federal financial aid. Any of the six regional accrediting agencies authorized by the U.S. Department of Education[3] and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)[4] can accredit a college . The following is a list of regional accrediting agencies:

Where regional accreditation is unavailable, the program the student is enrolling in should be programmatically accredited by a specialist accreditation agency. A specialist-accredited marketing degree signifies that the school satisfies the subject-specific requirements of the marketing industry. Some specialty accreditors include

  • International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) [5]
  • The International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) accredits bachelor programs offered by traditional colleges and institutions offering bachelor’s degrees.
  • Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) [6]
  • The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) provides quality assurance, business education intelligence, and learning and development services to over 1,700 member organizations and more than 900 accredited business schools worldwide.
  • Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) [7]
  • The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) is the only organization that accredits schools that offer bachelor’s degrees as their highest level of education, making them the only option for community colleges.

How to Pay for Master’s in Marketing Online Programs

The most significant benefit of online education is that students can work while pursuing their degrees, making certain educational costs more manageable. Even though online candidates do not have to pay for transportation, course materials, or childcare during class hours, they must still pay tuition, which can run up to tens of thousands of dollars. While most universities charge higher fees for out-of-staters than those in their home state, online programs typically have an advantage in that they often offer a single cost for all states in the country. Fortunately, some funding options are available to cover the cost of a master’s degree in marketing or significantly reduce the overall program cost. The following are some examples of funding sources:

Scholarships
Scholarships are typically monetary awards given to students by a university, an organization, or a business for their educational success. Most scholarships are based on academic achievements and unique talents or skills, while some are also based on financial needs. Most scholarship administrators will use various criteria to determine the amount of scholarships. In addition to their grades and test scores, scholarships may also use other markers of success, such as extracurricular or leadership activities, when determining how much to give a candidate.

Grants
Grants are typically given by the federal government, nonprofits, or foundations to individuals with special needs. They can cover educational expenses such as student accommodation, transportation, books, library fees, material required for research, etc. Many types of grants are available, each designed to address different requirements. Most grants are need-based, while some are merit-based.

Graduate Assistantships
A Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) is typically a form of financial aid requiring students to assist in the classroom setting. A graduate teaching assistantship usually requires them to commit a certain number of hours per week and be paid a stipend or an hourly wage. Graduate teaching assistantships are typically full-time positions over an academic quarter, trimester, or semester.

Student Loans
Student loans are another way for candidates to fund their education. Federal loans, bank loans, group and trust loans, and other types of financing are available. Unlike scholarships and grants, these loans must be paid back to the lender, along with interest. While these loans might help with education costs, they can also add to their debt, taking years to pay off. Some donors and grants also help applicants to pay off the loan amounts.

FAFSA
The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is a standardized form that applicants can fill in and submit to assess whether or not they are eligible for financial aid.

More information on various funding options is available in the best Financial Guide.
